Greenbrier County Man Sentenced to 10–25 Years for Sex Offender Registry Violations

LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – Greenbrier County Prosecuting Attorney Nicole Graybeal Campbell announced today that Christopher Shawn Rider, 35, was sentenced to a significant term of incarceration for repeatedly failing to comply with the West Virginia Sex Offender Registration Act.

In a hearing held this afternoon before the Honorable Robert E. Richardson, Rider was sentenced to an indeterminate term of not less than ten (10) years nor more than twenty-five (25) years in a state correctional facility. The Court ordered that this sentence run consecutively to any other sentences the defendant is currently serving.

Rider’s conviction stems from a June 2024 investigation by the West Virginia State Police, which revealed that Rider—who is required to register as a sex offender for life due to a 2016 conviction for Third Degree Sexual Assault involving a minor—had failed to report multiple changes to his required information.

Because Rider was previously convicted of a registration violation in Monroe County in 2023, the current charges were elevated to Second Offense.

“The Sex Offender Registry is a vital tool for public safety and law enforcement transparency,” said Prosecuting Attorney Campbell. “This result ensures that repeat offenders are held accountable when they knowingly refuse to comply with the legal obligations designed to protect our community. My office remains dedicated to the strict enforcement of these registration laws to keep Greenbrier County safe.”

The case was prosecuted by Attorney Ryan R. Blake. The investigation was led by Sgt. J. C. Mann of the West Virginia State Police. Rider was remanded to the custody of the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation to begin serving his sentence.
