UNION W.Va. (WVDN) – Nestled in the heart of Monroe County, Mama Joan’s Diner has officially opened this year, bringing a fresh dining experience to the small town of Union and its surrounding communities. With a focus on hearty, home-cooked meals and a welcoming atmosphere, the new eatery has quickly become a popular gathering spot for locals. Using her grandmother’s sacred recipes, the owner Judy Humphreys, has created a new space for the community

Mama Joan’s Diner, located at 7997 Sweet Springs Valley Rd. in Union, is designed to offer meals reminiscent of homemade Southern comfort food. From classic breakfast platters with fluffy biscuits and gravy to savory fried chicken dinners, the restaurant prides itself on serving fresh, made-from-scratch dishes that cater to all appetites.

Since opening, Mama Joan’s Diner has generated excitement in the close-knit community. Residents have been eager to try the new establishment, with many praising its generous portions, reasonable prices and friendly service. The diner’s arrival adds to the local restaurant scene, complementing long-standing favorites.

The menu at Mama Joan’s Diner boasts a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, with an emphasis on comfort food. Breakfast features include stacks of buttermilk pancakes, country ham, and made-to-order omelets. Lunchtime guests can enjoy hand-pressed burgers, fresh salads and house-made soups, while dinner specials include Southern-style meatloaf, fried catfish and mashed potatoes topped with rich brown gravy. Everything they create is sourced from the local community. The owner also wants the community to be aware of the specials offered on Friday and Sunday evenings, which the locals have come to enjoy.

Mama Joan’s is more than just a restaurant—it’s a family-run business with deep local roots. Joan Dunber, who has spent decades cooking for family and friends, decided to turn her passion into a full-time venture. With the help of her children and a dedicated staff, she has brought her culinary vision to life, serving up dishes inspired by generations of home cooking.

“We’re just getting started, but the support from the community has been incredible,” said Humphreys. “We’re looking forward to becoming a staple in Union, and we want people to know that all of our food is homemade.” She attributes her grandmother’s recipes for the inspiration of the restaurant and its name. Keeping true to community roots is something the folks at Mama Joans care about deeply.

Mama Joan’s Diner is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The restaurant also offers takeout options and possible plans to introduce catering services in the future.

For those looking to experience a taste of home-cooked comfort food in a warm and inviting setting, Mama Joan’s Diner is poised to become a go-to destination in Monroe County.

For more information, customers can call the diner at 304-772-4750, visit them on Facebook or visit in person at its Union location.
