COAL CITY – Greenbrier West’s girls basketball team went on the road Wednesday night and collected a 66-43 over the Independence Patriots. The win improved the ladies’ record to 5-5 with at least eleven games remaining on the regular season schedule. Back at .500, Greenbrier West has its sights set squarely on a rematch with Pocahontas County this Friday night. The Warriors came to Charmco on December 13 and handed West a 60-53 loss despite a 21-point effort from Preslee Treadway and 20 more from Maddie Fields.

The dynamic duo provided the scoring punch against Independence with each senior pouring in 18 points apiece. Treadway led the way in the first quarter with seven points and got a boost from another senior, Haylee Ward. Ward added five points with a three-pointer and a field goal. Fields and Brilee Redden added baskets as Greenbrier West got out to a 16-9 lead. Harmoney Mills led the Lady Patriots with seven points.

Fields and yet another senior, Lacey Critchley, dumped in six points apiece in the second quarter. Critchley’s buckets came on a pair of three-point baskets while Fields points came via three field goals. Treadway was on her teammate’s heels with five points. Mills remained hot for Independence with seven points. Lacey Goodson added the Patriot’s other four points as Greenbrier West built a 33-20 halftime advantage.

Fields and Treadway remained constant for West in the third quarter with six points apiece. Critchley drilled her third three-pointer of the game, and the Cavaliers put up 15 points in the quarter. Indy countered with five points from Goodson and a four-spot from Mills. Zoey Bragg added a pair of free throws, but West outscored the Patriots 15-11, building a 48-31 lead after three quarters.

As the fourth quarter played out, the West seniors continued to outshine Independence. With two players already in double figures, two more got busy adding to their scoring totals. Ward hit a pair of field goals and finished up her night with her second three-pointer, giving her 12 points on the night. Critchley had a pair of baskets for a 13-point effort. Fields collected a pair of baskets. Zayleigh Styer added a bucket and Sam Holliday a free throw to complete the West scoring. Treadway added 13 rebounds giving her a double-double.

Goodson notched eight points for Independence and Mills added four to her total for a game-high 22 points. Greenbrier West won going away, however, with an 18-12 fourth quarter. The 66-43 win was West’s first over Independence since sweeping the Patriots in 2016-17. The two schools had not played each other in eight seasons.

Greenbrier West travels to Pocahontas County Friday night. Independence hosts Shady Spring tonight.
