ELKINS, W.Va. (WVDN) – The Monongahela National Forest is planning spring prescribed fire operations, contingent upon favorable weather conditions and required approvals. Prescribed fire is a critical tool to help manage healthier forests, and to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.

The locations of the anticipated prescribed fires can be found on the below map.  More specific information will be provided for prescribed fires at the time of the associated event.

Here is a list of the planned prescribed fires for spring 2026 by unit name and priority:
  • Lockridge: Marlinton-White Sulphur District- 2,439 acres
  • Upper Greenbrier North: Greenbrier District- 465 acres
  • Nursery Bottom: Cheat-Potomac- 55 acres
  • Chestnut Ridge: Greenbrier District- 1,579 acres
  • One Mile: Marlinton-White Sulphur District- 724 acres
  • Upper John B. Hollow: Cheat-Potomac- 209 acres
  • North Fork: Marlinton-White Sulphur District- 331 acres
  • County Line: Marlinton-White Sulphur District- 472 acres
  • Lick Mountain: Marlinton-White Sulphur District- 448 acres
Burn areas may be closed to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.  Smoke may be visible from roadways. County emergency operations centers will be notified before burning begins.
