FAIRLEA- In what could be a preview of a regional second round matchup next week, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans gained a little confidence on Thursday night, May 7 when they shutout the Pikeview Lady Panthers 3-0 on a clear but cool evening at Spartan Field.

The Panthers are the 2-seed in the Class AAA, Region III tournament and the Spartans have been tabbed as the 3-seed.

But with freshman Chloey Wykle on the mound in this one, the Lady Spartans looked more like the higher seeded team.

Wykle threw a complete game, allowed just three hits, and struck out eight. She rarely allowed good contact and kept the Lady Panther hitters off balance all evening long.

The Lady Spartans had just three hits themselves but scored two runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth frame to seal it. Paige Totten scored the first run after she struck out but was able to reach first on a third strike passed ball. She scored on a Pikeview error a few pitches later. Then, Natalee Sibold scored on another passed ball and had gotten on base with a 2-out single.

That third run in the sixth came on an RBI single from Sydney Norman that scored Adyson Donovan.

Sibold was 1-3 with a run scored and Norman went 1-2 with an RBI.

Greenbrier East will now prepare for their first regional battle with Nicholas County next week. When that day and game start time is available, it will be updated on our Facebook page.
