MORGANTOWN- This past weekend, coach Ross Hodge and the West Virginia Mountaineers added two more basketball players from the transfer portal for next season when Utah forward Seydou Traore and St. John’s guard/forward Joson Sanon made their choices to be Mountaineers.
Traore, who committed late Friday night, averaged 9.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.2 steals for the Utes. Against the Mountaineers this past season, the lengthy senior scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds in a victory at Hope Coliseum.
Sanon is a former five-star recruit that was a top 20 player nationally out of high school in 2024 when he originally signed with Arizona State. With the Sun Devils, he averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and is a freakish athletic option that can shoot it from deep and get to the basket. His production dipped a little at St. John’s (7.9 ppg) in 2025-26 although Rick Pitino called him the most naturally gifted basketball player on the whole Red Storm roster. The plan for Sanon is for him to start at the small forward position next season.
West Virginia may be done now adding players for next season’s roster but are also waiting to see if Brenen Lorient can get a waiver to return next year. If he succeeds in that approval, the Mountaineers could arguably have the most talented roster they have had in quite some time. Even without Lorient, this team still has unlimited potential.
