ST. ALBANS- Greenbrier East snapped a 4-game losing streak with an impressive victory over the South Charleston Black Eagles on Saturday, April 18 at Kirk Field in St. Albans.
East got down early 1-0, but in the top of the second, they got an RBI double from Evan Dixon that scored Josiah Spencer and the Spartans knotted the game at 1-all.
The Black Eagles (5-15) regained the lead in the third on a Jackson Webb RBI single, but Spartan pitcher Nelson Lynch retired the next two hitters to get out of the jam.
Greenbrier East would answer immediately in the subsequent at-bat and did so all with two outs. Dixon singled after two quick outs and then Wyatt Thornton doubled him home. Thornton then scored on Clay Patton’s base knock and the Spartans had taken a 3-2 advantage.
The top of the seventh is where the Spartans made their money.
With the score tied at 3-3 headed to that final frame, Lynch blasted a solo homerun to right field for a 4-3 East lead. Three batters later, Bo Bundy put the ball in play and scored Brayden Brown on an RBI groundout for a 5-3 East lead headed to the final South Charleston at-bat.
Braden Teaney then took the mound for Greenbrier East, threw just 11 pitches, and sat the Black Eagles down harmlessly in order and the boys in green and gold picked up win number three this season (3-13).
The win could give the Spartans some much needed momentum as they go into Monday’s home battle with Beckley with a lot more confidence. East has already beaten Woodrow once this season. In fact, that was their last victory before the recent 4-game skid.
