GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – On Dec. 9 the Greenbrier County Commission met in regular session.

Among the business brought before the Commission was a resolution to make the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Corporation the lead development organization in Greenbrier County. Ruthann Beezley was on hand from the Greenbrier County Economic Development Corporation to speak to the Commission. Beezley said that it has been multiple years since the Greenbrier County Economic Development Corporation has served as the lead for Greenbrier County. This matching grant will allow them to continue to support ongoing operations and to support property development funds. When asked what they were currently working on, Beezley said there was much that couldn’t be discussed, but they were working with the governor’s office on a track nearby.

The Commission voted unanimously to dismiss all claims in their opioid claim case except the one against Express Scripts.

In other business, the Commission voted to reallocate funds from the American Rescue Funds for the Health Department to include the Day Report roof and demolition of dilapidated structures.

In what will be big news for Greenbrier County, the Commission voted to partner with team-based camp Hope City for FIFA26, the Greenbrier Hotel, and the Department of Tourism. Commissioner Holliday said one great thing is that the tourism this brings in will be phenomenal.

Commissioner Woody Hanna wanted to make sure that it was explained what FIFA stands for. It’s the Federation Internationale de Football Association, or as it is more commonly known in America, soccer. It’s unknown at this time which two teams will be at the Greenbrier using the fields. This will be in June and July of 2026. Although the exact length of time isn’t determined. It depends on how the teams do in the tournament. The players’ families will be with them, and with so many people in the area, it’s sure to be a boost for Greenbrier County’s economy.

The Commission went over the contract, but it was too long to read in the meeting, plus they couldn’t share until it’s finalized.

They will be having two police officers on duty for the duration of FIFA 26 24/7 with the right to bill $90 because it will be overtime.

Commission President Lowell Rose said it will get lots of people talking about Greenbrier County.
