WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WVDN) – The White Sulphur Springs City Council met in regular session on Monday, April 13.

The financial report was given by David Dillon. Among the amounts told was the revenue up to March 31. This amount was $176,849.70. with expenditures being $145,671.75. Leaving an excess of $31,177.95. The revenue for the fiscal year to date is $1,990,237,15, with expenditures being $1,841,082.44, leaving an excess of $149,154.51.

In other business, Mayor Taylor said that things have been moving along, some slower than others.

“I feel with what has been uncovered, we are progressing–not as quickly as I would like. But we have to move forward and keep up the good work that is going on now,” Taylor said.

Taylor mentioned that in a matter of hours, all properties owned by the city would be mowed.

When asked what was meant by what was uncovered, Taylor responded by saying that there was nothing fraudulent or anything. Just a lot of overspending that had gone on in previous administrations, along with overextending the budget. He went on to explain that when there are invoices that are eight months old, and you enter everything in August, that creates a problem.

Taylor announced that the city will be moving forward with the water meter project. He said they’ll be the most advanced water meters available.

Audrey Van Buren made the announcement that if lifeguards aren’t found, the city pool won’t be able to open.

David Dillon said that the schedule for monthly street sweeping is available by calling City Hall. He also reminded everyone that recycling is no longer automatic, and you must get on a list by calling city hall. Pick up will be on the first and third Mondays.

Mayor Taylor said AL Robinson has been chosen as the engineering firm for the water meter project.

The mayor discussed how the city was losing money on residential garbage pickup. The decision was made to raise rates to $22.50 for residential and $35 for businesses without dumpsters.

The city council is forming a separate finance committee. It will consist of six members, who will be: Mayor Thomas Taylor, Rusty Beyer, Dr William Claphan, Dr Robert Alexo and GP Parker. Financial Director Crystal Byers will serve as a non-voting member.
