NITRO, W.Va. (WVDN) — State and local emergency crews are responding to a chemical spill at a refinery on the border of Nitro and Institute that sent several people to the hospital Tuesday.

The West Virginia Department of Homeland Security’s Emergency Management Division, along with the Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Protection, is coordinating with Kanawha County officials to manage the incident at Ames Goldsmith Catalyst Refiners.

State officials confirmed that multiple individuals are receiving treatment at local medical facilities.

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our citizens,” Gov. Patrick Morrisey said in a statement. “We are working around the clock with local officials to ensure this incident is contained and that all necessary state resources are on the ground to protect the community.”

In a social media post, Senator Shelley Moore Capito said, “I am aware of the chemical emergency at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute and am closely monitoring the situation as it develops. I am grateful to our local first responders and emergency personnel who are on the scene working quickly to contain the incident and keep residents and workers safe. In the meantime, my office is staying in contact with state and local officials, and I encourage those in the affected area to follow any and all guidance from officials as we continue to learn more.”

Treasurer Larry Pack stated, “The chemical emergency at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute was a terrible tragedy,” Treasurer Pack said. “My condolences and prayers go out to the families of those affected by this incident. I am grateful for our local first responders and emergency personnel who worked to keep our citizens safe.”

Personnel from the state’s Emergency Management Division are stationed at the county’s command center to provide operational support. The DEP is currently on-site assisting with decontamination and the disposal of hazardous materials.

Local officials have issued Personal Protective Measures for residents in the surrounding area. While no mandatory evacuations have been announced, residents are urged to follow local safety guidance and monitor for updates.

State emergency leaders said they remain ready to deploy additional resources as the situation develops.

Ames Goldsmith Catalyst Refiners specializes in the production of silver-based catalysts and chemicals, according to the company’s website. The facility is located in a heavy industrial corridor between the Nitro and Institute communities.
