The Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department annual stocking giveaway will still be on Thursday, Dec. 24, (Christmas Eve), as in years past. It will be held on Island Park and will be a drive thru this year due to COVID-19 and all the stipulations put on events.
The park will be blocked off to only one way traffic. Traffic will enter thru Monroe Avenue, then proceed to Mulligan Lumber to line up, and the line will cross the park then exit back out onto Rt. 219 after they get their stockings.
No one will be allowed out of their vehicles this year. Line up will start at 1:30 p.m. and we will start passing them out at 2 p.m. until we run out or everyone that shows up gets one.
Santa will be making an appearance but he is not having any visits with children. He will assist in handing stockings out to vehicles. Kids can wave from their vehicles.
Event organizers know it’s far from the traditional stocking giveaway, but the risks of COVID-19 didn’t allow for that to happen.
There was talk of canceling this year, but the members of our department didn’t want that to happen. The fire department put together the drive thru idea, and cleared it with the Greenbrier County Health Department. Organizers hope it works well for this year and hopefully we can be back to the traditional way next year.
Everyone is invited to come out and get a stocking for everyone in the vehicle. And enjoy the Christmas Eve tradition while remaining safe and avoiding large crowds.
