Lewisburg Planning Commission members were brought up to speed regarding renovations on the old Farmer Mac’s building in downtown Lewisburg at their recent monthly meeting.
The building is being renovated to house professional office suites and will be called Jefferson Park.

Tiffany Smith of Lewisburg has been named a Highlander Scholar in the honors program at Radford University.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brad Smith of Sinks Grove.

White Sulphur’s Assistant Chief of Police James Hylton not only received a diploma for completing a two-week course of DARE School at Canaan Valley, he also received a medallion for being tapped the top instructor in the program.

Marvin E. Lore III has been promoted in the U.S. Army to the rank of private two.
He is the son of Karl E. and Janice Maria Lore of Lewisburg and is a 1996 graduate of Greenbrier East High School.

Winners of the Thanksgiving turkey giveaway during the recent arts and crafts fair at the Greenbrier Valley Mall were Sandra McElwain of Lewisburg and Douglas Crawford of Alderson.

Jim Williams of Eastern Greenbrier Junior High School had the distinctive honor of being one of West Virginia’s two representatives at the National Geographic Society’s Summer Geography Workshop on Habitat, July 10-25.

White Sulphur Springs City Administrator Darin Simpson will leave his post with the city to go to work for Earthtech, the company that the city contracted to oversee operations of the city’s sewer collection system.

Jeremy Pomeroy of Clintonville has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference from November 19-24 in Washington, D.C.

The Renick Volunteer Fire Department recently was presented a certificate of recognition for its outstanding commitment to the protection of Renick, Greenbrier County, and the state of West Virginia.

Elam Leed of Friars Hill has enrolled at Centre College.
He is the son of Diane and William Leed of Friars Hill.

50 Years Ago…
The historical General Lewis Hotel was damaged Thursday afternoon when a smouldering fire broke out in the basement underneath the dining room area of the two-story structure. Local fire departments held the damage to a minimum. Smoke damage being the greatest.

Army Private Robert E. Halstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert N. Halstead of Lewisburg, recently completed an 11-week lineman course at the U.S. Army Southeastern Signal School, Fort Gordon, Ga.

Charles S. Schrader, principal of Greenbrier West High School, and Roy Coffman, principal of Alderson Junior High School, represented Greenbrier County at the 52nd annual meeting of the West Virginia Secondary School Principals Commission in Huntington from November 7-9.

Martin Ford Sales Inc., Lewisburg, announces the appointment of Paul F. Jones to the position of service sales manager for the local Ford-Mercury dealership.

Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Arbuckle have returned to their home north of Lewisburg from Miami Beach, Fla., where they attended an insurance meeting.

Army Specialist Five Larry O. Gibson, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Gibson, and wife, Laura, live in Rupert, reenlisted in the Regular Army for four years.

New officers were installed in the Lewisburg Lucky Clover 4-H Club: Cindy Goodall, president; Linda Loudermilk, first vice president; Kathleen Napier, second vice president; Pam Arbaugh, secretary; and Donna Richardson, treasurer.

75 Years Ago…
Four miles have been graded on the six-mile stretch of highway between Alderson and Fort Spring.
Completion of the road is expected within three or four months.

B.B. Taylor of Renick reports that a valuable cow belonging to him was recently stolen from a boundary between Unus and Williamsburg. In the same vicinity also, livestock belonging to L.L. Graybeal of Renick was stolen.

Charles A. George, president of P.A. George & Co. of Ronceverte, recently purchased the 38 acres of land and four lots known as Bruce Hollow on the northern outskirts of town from Thomas L. Moss, has deeded a portion of the land to the Greenbrier County Board of Education with the stipulation that it be made into an athletic field for Greenbrier High School.

The motor in the Alderson cinder block plant caught on fire last Thursday morning. The fire department was called, but on arrival it was found that Fred Hardesty had ventured in and put the fire out with a hand extinguisher. No damage was done.

100 Years Ago…
The old Greenbrier Baptist Church of Alderson will celebrate its 140th anniversary beginning November 24, 1921. The birth of the church having been November 24, 1781.

A special force of 1,000 men selected from overseas soldiers will be organized as a permanent postal service to combat the mail bandits who are robbing mail cars and persons connected with the mail service.

The fire on Muddy Creek Mountain, which raged from Wednesday-Friday, was extinguished by the rain which began Saturday night.
Some fencing, timber, and crops were the only reported damage.
