GREENBRIER COUNTY- Bentley Burns, a fifth grader at Ronceverte Elementary School, grew a sunflower with a 54.5” circumference. Landon Webb, a second grader at Lewisburg Elementary School, grew a sunflower with a 54.25” circumference. Bentley and Landon were both awarded a grand prize of $50, along with a Birds of West Virginia book. All students who presented a sunflower to be measured received a $1 and a conservation certificate.
As always, it was great fun for members Jill Gwinn, Carol Olsen, Sue McKinney, Martha Perilli, and Suzanne Perilli to visit the impressive schools and measure each beautiful sunflower. Many thanks to the principals, teachers and secretaries who also contribute to the success of this project.
The Lewisburg House and Garden Club has been distributing seeds, teaching about nature’s cycle, the value of feeding birds, and organizing this friendly contest since 1959. Club members return to the schools in May to distribute sunflower seed packets for the 2027 growing season.
