GREENBRIER COUNTY- Greenbrier East turned in an impressive performance on a challenging Greenbrier Course on Tuesday, Aug. 18, finishing atop a four-team field while a pair of standout golfers battled for medalist honors.
Playing a modified layout with a par of 74 and six par-5 holes, the Spartans posted a team score of 318 to finish two strokes ahead of James River, which carded a 320. Rockbridge County finished third at 363, while Alleghany rounded out the field with a 414.
The highlight of the afternoon came from the No. 1 pairing, where Greenbrier East senior Isaac Hutchison and James River senior Landon Bolling went toe-to-toe for the day’s low round. Bolling ultimately claimed medalist honors with a 5-under-par 69, but Hutchison was right behind him with an outstanding 4-under 70.
Both golfers are expected to continue their competitive careers at the collegiate level.
Rockbridge County’s top golfer, Davis Welsh, finished with a 79, while Alleghany freshman Jagger Rowland shot an 86. Rowland gained valuable experience competing alongside three senior No. 1 players in Hutchison, Bolling, and Welsh.
Conditions added another layer of difficulty to the round. Recent rainfall left the course wet and produced exceptionally high rough, creating a demanding test for the golfers despite the beautiful weather.
Behind Hutchison’s 70, Greenbrier East received rounds of 85 from Seth Napier, 80 from Sam Roshau, 83 from Evan Clinebell, 85 from Jake Hutchison and, 95 from Eli McMillion.
The Spartans’ four counting scores of 70, 80, 83 and 85 produced their winning total of 318.
