Legendary musician Tom T. Hall passed away on Friday, August 20, at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. Hall was 85.
A troubadour in every sense of the word, Hall was the artistic force behind such cherished songs as “That’s How I Got to Memphis”, “Harper Valley P.T.A.” and “Faster Horses (the Cowboy and the Poet).
Hall was selected as a member of The Grand ‘Ole Opry in 1971, and inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2008. Throughout the course of his nearly 60-year career, Hall had penned a total of 12 chart-topping songs, with another 26 that reached the top 10. He also collaborated with other celebrated musicians, such as Loretta Lynn, Johnnie Wright and Johnny Cash.
Other than writing and performing his music, Hall had several stints as a radio disc jockey in both Kentucky and West Virginia, including some time spent on the air here in the Greenbrier Valley.
In the coming days, The West Virginia Daily News will provide a much more thorough and fitting tribute to the “Storyteller” whose music touched the lives of so many.
In the meantime, please join with us in celebration of his musical legacy…
“Thank you for your precious time…
Forgive me if I start to cryin’.
That’s how I got to Memphis, that’s how I got to Memphis…”
