GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – During the Greenbrier County Commission meeting, Commissioners discussed various agenda items, including approving minutes, financial approvals, and a proclamation honoring National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Also, there was an update on the sewer project in White Sulphur Springs, including the low bidder’s information and the need to award the contract prior to May 6. The Commission also discussed the reorganization of the Greenbrier County 911 Center, including the elimination of the director position and the creation of a 911 Center manager position, as well as the need for improved public transportation in the county.
Action was taken on the following topics: The transfer of $21,214.20 from savings to checking to cover financial approvals. The promotions of Karla Blankenship to 911 manager effective April 9, and Jordan Clendenen to 911 systems administrator effective April 9. Approvals of funding included a $10,000 funding request from Mountain Transit Authority for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, a $2,200 payment for flood control dam maintenance for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 fiscal years, and the approval of bid submission from BRC Contracting for Route 60 sanitary sewer replacement project, pending legal confirmation. Also, The county declared April 14-20 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
The Public Safety Department was on hand to discuss future events and planning of the 911 Center reorganization, pay raises and appraisal services for the Meadow River Trail Project. The requested funding amount for the appraisal of the Meadow River Trail Phase III project was $7,500.
Topics regarding MTA (Mountain Transit Authority) were improving public transportation for recovery services in rural West Virginia, focusing more services and attention on the western end of Greenbrier County, especially for those in recovery who need to get to meetings, services and medical appointments. MTA’s ridership is increasing exponentially daily. Ridership has continued to increase significantly each year, reaching over 27,000 trips in 2023.
Extra efforts to improve medical transportation services, including the State of Recovery grant and partnership with Marvel Center, are vital for those in treatment programs.
MTA officials are also working with the Osteopathic School and Marvel Center on a state of recovery grant from AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) to provide individuals in recovery with education and job training opportunities. The Department Center for Rural Community Health’s grant from AARC to work with individuals in recovery is providing education and job training for many Greenbrier County residents.
The next item on the agenda was an agreement for the Greenbrier County flood control dam and channel operation maintenance, regarding potential flooding for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 fiscal years. This is a requirement that the county is required to fund this item because there is a dam at Tuckahoe Lake in White Sulphur Springs and that dam is part of the project parameters. This also covers other creeks and things throughout the year that are cleaned out or the preparation and maintenance of water systems. It was highly agreed upon that this funding and grant money is needed to maintain, upgrade, restore and repair any antiquated and faulty systems. Funding will be approved in the amount of $2,200 and improved upon in the next fiscal year; 2024/2025.
