WASHINGTON D.C.(WVDN) — On May 13, leaders from across the country will gather in Washington, D.C. for the Friends of National Service Awards, an annual, bipartisan celebration hosted by Voices for National Service. At this year’s ceremony, April Elkins-Badtke, Executive Director of Conservation Legacy’s Stewards Individual Placements program, will be honored as the National Service Advocate of the Year. The award recognizes exemplary determination, creativity, and results in building support for AmeriCorps among our nation’s leaders.

“April embodies the strength, power, and importance of national service,” said Amy Sovocool, President of Conservation Legacy. “Her focus on protecting and elevating opportunities for people to serve one another and improve the lives of West Virginians and others across the nation is unmistakable. I am so incredibly proud of her work, her commitment, and her dedication to the entire national service community.”

“April Elkins-Badtke stands out as one of the most effective and committed advocates for national service in the country,” said AnnMaura Connolly, President of Voices for National Service. “From her leadership in West Virginia to her impact nationwide, she operates at every level—engaging policymakers, mobilizing local leaders, and empowering fellow program directors to make the case for service. Her work has strengthened bipartisan support for AmeriCorps and demonstrated how sustained, strategic advocacy can translate into real opportunities for communities. She exemplifies the purpose of the Stoneman Brown National Service Advocate of the Year Award.”

“I am honored to be recognized by Voices, but this award is not about me, it is for the national service members who show up every day committed to make a difference not only in their communities but within themselves,” said April Elkins-Badtke, “The award is for communities like those in my beloved West Virginia and across the country who benefit from AmeriCorps and need a voice to make sure AmeriCorps opportunities are available for them.”

At Conservation Legacy, a partnership with Voices for National Service is a key part of advancing this work. As a member of the coalition’s steering committee, the organization collaborates with peers nationwide to ensure national service remains a powerful, bipartisan solution to the challenges facing communities today. The Friends of National Service Awards highlight the bipartisan support for service across sectors and celebrate leaders who are helping move this work forward. April Elkins-Badtke’s recognition underscores the impact of strong advocacy and the importance of continued investment in national service as a force for good in communities across the country.
