Frankford Elementary School was awarded $2,000 to develop the school’s Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site (OWLS) as part of the Division of Natural Resources’ OWLS program.

Elizabeth Ellen Satterfield of Lewisburg is among the 558 students at Eastern Kentucky University named to the president’s list for the fall semester.
She is a junior pre-nursing major.

The first grade class at Union Elementary School, taught by Kathy A. Martin, is the recipient of a West Virginia Education Fund Minigrant.
The class’ project is titled “Here A Tree, There A Tree, Everywhere A Tree.”

Area photographer Bob Brown of Brown’s Photography in the Red Oaks Shopping Center in Fairlea recently competed in the 62nd annual print competition of the Professional Photographers of West Virginia held in Parkersburg.
All 10 of Brown’s entries received Awards of Achievement. Three other photographs received judges’ awards, placing Brown as one of the top six photographers in the state.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Daniel A. Ramirez, son of Ellen L. Hambrick of Lewisburg, is serving in the Adriatic Sea near Bosnia aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.
The 1992 graduate of Greenbrier East High School joined the Navy in September 1992.

Taking top honors at the recent Father-Son Bakeoff, held for members of Cub Scout 51 in White Sulphur Springs, were Eric Liebendorfer and Allyson Liebendorfer (standing in for her husband, Mark) and Andres Ickes and father, Larry Ickes.

The Union God Squad won first place in the Eastern Greenbrier Church Basketball League Tournament on March 9 over the Frankford Glory, 107-61.

Joseph Heath won the state wrestling championship held March 2-3 in Parkersburg.
Wrestling for the Greenbrier Grapplers Youth Wrestling Team in the 210-lb. weight class, Heath competed against the best wrestlers from across the state to win the top honors.

Luther Wright, son of Betty Wright of Ronceverte, has been accepted by Northwestern College, Lima, Ohio, to begin classes in the August session 1996.
He attends Greenbrier East High School where he is an active member of the FFA.

Dennis and Leigh Ann Rudd of Lewisburg have opened National Hometown Center in the Crawford’s Complex in Fairlea in the location formerly occupied by the Sears store.

50 Years Ago…
Plans for construction of a new single-band radio Appalachian hardwood sawmill have been announced at Rainelle by Georgia-Pacific Corporation.
Plans for the sawmill follow Georgia-Pacific’s acquisition made last year of the Meadow River Lumber Company.

The Town of Alderson will hold a special local option election on March 30 to determine whether or not alcoholic beverages shall be sold in the town.

Attorney Michael C. Smith of Union has succeeded attorney C. Thomas Bobbitt of Lewisburg as attorney for District Nine of the West Virginia Department of Highways.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James L Pritt, son of Mrs. Bertha Pritt of Rainelle, is on duty at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam.
The sergeant attended Crichton High School.

Ronceverte-Lewisburg residents are talking more than ever, at least on the telephone, according to F.M. Staunton, local commercial manager for C&P Telephone.
“World’s Telephones,” an annual booklet published by TA&T, reveals that Americans are the world’s greatest conversationalists, averaging 745 conversations a year.

Paul M. Scott Jr. of Ronceverte has recently received New York Life Insurance Company’s Leader Award for his outstanding sales performance in group insurance during 1970.

The Greenbrier Valley Citizens Band Radio Club recently broke ground for their new club building, located about one mile west of Organ Cave.

A one-act play written by Bill Kelley, a drama student at Greenbrier East High School, will be presented by the students of GEHS as their entry in the Region V Drama and Forensics Festival to be held Friday at the school.

75 Years Ago…
N.S. Arbuckle, Lewisburg horse fancier, recently bought at Gettysburg, Ohio, a saddle-bred colt nearing two years old, sired by Haines’ Chief and whose dam is Lady Likely.

The new Firestone store will be opened in Ronceverte on Friday, March 15. Owned and operated under a Firestone franchise by Henry H. Kauffelt, the new concern will operate under the name of Kauffelt’s Home and Auto Store.

Miss Ruth R. Jordan of Ronceverte is on the dean’s honor roll at Storer College, Harpers Ferry, as a quality freshman student for the semester ending in February.

A welcomed newcomer to Greenbrier County is Brady Greene Epling, who has purchased the Edward M. Ferrin farm north of Lewisburg. Mr. Epling comes from Illinois to Greenbrier.

100 Years Ago…
A meeting was held Monday night at the mayor’s office at which the active young men of Ronceverte formed a club to promote baseball in the city and community for the coming season.

The Beman Auto Company of Ronceverte received a carload of Indiana trucks this week. The Indiana, known as “The Highway Freighter,” is built like a battleship for a rough sea.

The Rev. Helen Hill, the only woman preacher in West Virginia, has resigned the pastorate of the Baptist church at Richwood to take charge of a church in Kansas, her native state.
