WILLIAMSBURG, KY- Micah Fisher, a Greenbrier East High School graduate and star wrestler, qualified for the national championship by taking second place in the Mid-South Conference Tournament this past weekend. Her freshman campaign at the University of the Cumberlands includes six wins over opponents ranked in the top ten nationally.
Fisher pinned Jamila McBryde of Life University, who was ranked number one at the time, at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on January 5 at the University of Northern Iowa. Micah proved her victory was no fluke by winning 10-9 over the current number one wrestler, Emma Walker, of Campbellsville University in the semifinal round of the conference championship.
During her time at Greenbrier East, Fisher was a three-time West Virginia girls state champion in high school.
“This is how I worship God right now. He makes all things beautiful in his time,” Fisher said when explaining how she is able to compete at such a high level as a college student while serving active-duty Army National Guard and Reserve Officer Training Corps.
“I did a couple moves in that match with Emma that I have never done before, including a throw that I have never even practiced. God never ceases to amaze me. He gave me what I needed to win that match,” she added.
Fisher’s first-year coach, Sarah Allen, who led the team to a respectable third place finish in the conference, has been all smiles for a while.
“I am so happy for the whole team. We have several girls, like Micah, who will do very well at nationals,” Allen stated.
Assistant coach Jesse Kirby has been impressed with Fisher since she showed up on the first day at this level.
“Micah has blown us all away from the moment she stepped on the mat here at Cumberlands. She is such a hard worker and never gives up, no matter how much the odds are against her in a match. Not only is she a very impressive wrestler but she is a great person as well. She is a very caring teammate and sets a wonderful example for all that surround her. I have no doubt that Micah will continue to find success on the mat and on any path she takes in life,” Kirby said with a smile.
The women’s NAIA National Wrestling championship will be held in Jamestown, North Dakota on March 8 and 9. You can watch live video streaming of the action at flowrestling.org.
