Road Hog’s Barbeque in White Sulphur Springs recently concluded their inaugural “Great Pork Pool”, where participants tried to successfully guess the total amount of pork that the popular Main Street restaurant smoked throughout 2020.
And without further ado, the winner of the first-ever Road Hog’s Barbeque “Great Pork Pool” is…Russell Reid.
Reid correctly guessed that Road Hog’s smoked nearly 9,000 pounds of pork in 2020. To put it another way, almost four-and-a-half tons of pork were prepared over the course of Road Hog’s first year in business. As a point of reference, that is the weight-equivalent of two 1977 Chevy Novas, a 1990 Ford Festiva and a South African Mountain Zebra combined. Another accurate weight-comparison would be a small forklift simultaneously carrying both a large ballistic missile and a baby grand piano.
The contest ran throughout the month of January. Each customer was allowed one guess for free. Additional guesses could be purchased for $1. For guessing correctly, Reid has won a year’s worth of smoked pork (52-pounds) from Road Hog’s.
In typical Road Hog’s fashion, all proceeds from the contest were donated to the White Sulphur Springs Community Food Pantry.
In a post on social media dated Wednesday, Feb. 10, the team at Road Hog’s said, “An extra special thank you to everyone who participated. We were able to donate $232 to the White Sulphur Springs Community Food Pantry. Their treasurer, Mary Collins, stopped in yesterday to say thanks to you all.”
In a video message accompanying the post, Collins said, “We want to thank Road Hog’s for donating the money. They do so much for our community, and we’re very grateful that they’re here.”
In the same video message, Road Hog’s co-owner Clay Elkins said, “This wasn’t Road Hog’s (who raised the money), this was the community backing us. So thank you all very much!”
The White Sulphur Springs Community Food Pantry is located behind Emmanuel United Methodist Church on Hanna Lane. They are open for anyone in need on the first and third Mondays of each month. Food Pantry hours are from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.
