With an infection rate of 24.80% and a percent positive of 3.14%, Mercer County has been designated as yellow on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources color-coded daily County Alert System Map. Immediately following the DHHR’s release of the updated designation on Friday, January 29, Mercer County school officials took to social media to post the academic schedule for the upcoming week.
The post states, “All elementary students will attend five-days a week. Middle and high school students will continue with Blended Model B. The alphabetic breakdown by last name is:
• Monday 2/1: L – Z
• Tuesday 2/2: A – K
• Wednesday 2/3: L – Z
• Thursday 2/4: A – K
• Friday 2/5: L – Z
Keep in mind that any snow day or remote day could change this schedule.”
COVID-19 numbers in Mercer County have been slowly decreasing in recent weeks.
However, despite the seemingly positive progression, a social media post from school officials, dated Thursday, January 28, states, “A positive COVID-19 case has been confirmed at Bluefield Intermediate School. Contact tracing has concluded and those exposed are quarantined. Deep cleaning and disinfection of affected areas will be completed.”
In other Mercer County Schools news, two teachers, as well as the principal from the Melrose School have each been awarded the STEM-Minded Educator Grant Award. Teachers Leeann Taylor and Ashley Weatherly, and Principal Edie Bennett each received a grant-award totaling $1,000.
According to school officials, “They plan on using the funds for a third-grade bridge unit and a school-wide project on Push/Pull. These educators are going above and beyond for their students!”
