All local community service agencies collaborate with other organizations, so that if one can’t help a family, another agency can, or maybe someone else can offer assistance. Together everyone makes a big difference in the quality of life for a lot of families. We all try to help in whatever way we can.
If you think there is not a problem in Greenbrier County, talk to someone who deals with these situations every day. This is a major issue in our county. It is very sad and shocking at the same time. Despite the beauty of the Greenbrier Valley area, this problem still exists among our neighbors.
There are families that don’t have heat right now, electricity or water because they can’t pay their bill. A lot of folks are under the impression that if it’s winter, and you have children, the power company can’t turn your power off. If your bill is in arrears and you can’t make a payment it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, the power company will turn it off. If you can’t pay the bill, they have no choice but to cut it off. Once these families get behind they can’t get caught up.
It’s true we are all just one situation from being homeless. One accident, one hospital bill, something happens to the main source of family income — these are things that can happen to anyone.
Most of the families we help work, but most of them work minimum wage jobs and of lot these families involve a single parent who doesn’t receive child support. The realization of poverty in our area is very humbling and very much of an eye opening experience. After conducting Penny Pitch interviews, or if you have a job where you deal with this on a regular basis, you question how these families survive each day.
Penny Pitch is not the answer to all of these families problems, but it will provide clothing and toys for these children at Christmas, as well as a food box. We need your help to make this happen.
Please send your donation today to Penny Pitch, P.O. Box 494, Lewisburg, W.V. 24901 or you can drop it by The West Virginia Daily News office, located a t 188 Foster St.
