LEWISBURG (WVDN) – The Greenbrier County Commission met on Tuesday, Dec. 20, with Tammy Tincher remotely attending due to ill health. This was the last meeting for Commissioner Mike McClung, as he is retiring after serving 12 years. Newly elected Commissioner Blaine Phillips was in attendance at the meeting and was then sworn in the following day.
Business of the county included closing 13 estates and routine bill paying.
A resolution was presented on the litigation regarding Steven Snyder vs. Greenbrier County Commission and others, civil action no. 21-c-45. McClung stated that some of the wording had changed since they had last considered a settlement, but nothing that altered the basics, so he moved to accept the settlement. The other commissioners agreed.
Next, they signed a grant agreement with Region 4 Planning and Development to administrate the ARPA funding grant for extension of water services from Sam Black to Asbury and from Rainelle to Charmco. This agreement will have to go through the county attorney before it is complete.
Two requests for absence or leave without pay were made by newly-elected officials. The leave was granted for Mike Honaker as director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management while he serves his new position in the state House of Delegates. Leave was also granted to Vince Deeds for Jan.2-March 10, 2023, to serve in the State Senate.
Because of the impending storm the Courthouse holiday hours have been changed from half days on Dec. 23 and 30, to full closure on Friday, Dec. 23, and a full day open on Dec. 30.
The meeting ended with words from McClung. “In the words of an old Jim Reeves song, ‘This is it, this day is here.’” He received a gift of a framed Robert Tuckwiller print of harness racing in front of the State Fair grandstand and was quite thrilled about it.
McClung said, “In this life there are blessings, and there are honors. Blessings come through the grace of God; Honors are earned, and being able to sit in the county’s chair for the last 12 years has really been an honor and a privilege.
“My profound appreciation to the people of Greenbrier County for allowing me to be their commissioner. There are times when a thank-you seems not enough, but it is all I have, so, thank you.”
