LEWISBURG (WVDN) – The Greenbrier East Spartans volleyball team placed four girls on the all-state teams that were just recently announced.
Dia Sauvage (first team), Gracie Gumm (special honorable mention), Alexis Stack (special honorable mention) and Hailey Ervin (honorable mention) were huge pieces to the Spartans puzzle this past season. What is even better is the fact that all four girls return in 2023.

Coach Matt Sauvage acknowledged how special each girl is not only on the court and how the teams’ success benefitted from those traits.
“Hailey stepped into a new role this season as a setter for our team. Hailey was able to help this team reach our goals. Setting is a tough position, and she was able to succeed at a high level,” Sauvage stated.
“Gracie needed to become one of our leaders this year. Not only was she a good leader, but she also became one of the best blockers in the state. A good middle makes a good team; Gracie definitely filled that role,” he said proudly.
“Dia has become one of the best players in the state. She serves well, passes well and leads well. Dia is achieving rare air with her ability in the backrow. It’s not often teams’ game plan around a back row player, but they have to with her.”
“Alexis came to East this year and entered into a brand-new team. She was not only able to step in and become part of GEVB, but she also stepped up as an offensive threat. It’s hard to become one of the best outsides in class AAA, but she accomplished that,” Sauvage said.
However, as good as they are at volleyball, they are even better people.
“My favorite thing about all four of these young ladies is not their accomplishment or skill on the court. It’s who they are as young ladies — respectful, faith-bearing, leaders and great academically — I could go on. They are an awesome group of young ladies,” the coach concluded.
