LEWIWBURG (WVDN) – When an opponent never scores, it is tough for them to win the game.
Case in point, Greenbrier East boys’ soccer.
The Spartans improved to 5-0 over the past week after a 2-0 over Princeton and a 1-0 victory at University. Luke Dolin and Adam Seams each had a goal in the win over Princeton. Goalkeeper, Joe Cochran registered four saves.
Chase Mizia got the lone goal for the Spartans in the win over the Hawks from University in Morgantown.
The Spartans have yet to allow a goal this season heading into a game against Pocahontas County this Thursday, Sept. 8. Not one. Zilch.
It is a feat that is almost unheard of even in a low scoring sport like soccer. Eventually, a team scores at some point. And that is what will eventually happen here as well. A team will finally kick a ball into the net against the Spartans, but head coach Lucas Lemine says as of now, it is kept quiet and his players absolutely love defending on the field.
“Right now, it’s very similar to a no-hitter or perfect game. We don’t talk about it. It’s a word not used in practice,” Lemine said.
“It’s all about the effort. We are putting the material out there as coaches and the players are eating it all. They are retaining information on a very high level. The defenders are enjoying it as much as the keeper. They don’t want him to even register a save. They are protecting him whereas the goalie is normally there to protect you (the other players). It’s been interesting to see the character shown in defending. It’s a normally thankless job. Goal scorers get the bulk of the credit in a win, but our defense has been lights out,” Lemine said.
Still, if a team does eventually score, Lemine is anxious to see something there too.
“I’m anxious to see how the group will react if or when they are scored on,” he concluded.
The Spartans will try for another shutout tonight against Pocahontas County.
