ASBURY (WVDN) – Irene F. Snyder is set to celebrate her 105th birthday on Sept. 9. Snyder was born on Sept. 9, 1917.
The family sent these notes about Snyder’s life:
1.) She grew up on a self-sufficient family farm and had no electricity until 1948.The home place is now part of the national forest.
2.) She is the oldest of eight siblings; four are still living including Irene.
3.) She had long walks to school in the snow including having to boat across the Greenbrier River.
4.) When she was young, she worked at the Sweet Shop in Lewisburg.
5.) She was married 1941 raised two children.
6.) She is a longtime resident of Asbury.
7.) She owned and ran the local general store and was post mistress in Asbury
8.) She traveled the world to Australia, Europe, Russia, New Zealand, Central America, South America, the South Pacific and Mexico.
9.) She lived through time of 18 presidents starting with Woodrow Wilson.
10.) She lived through wars since WWI, horse and buggy travel, the depression, modern air travel and men on the moon.
11.) Has seen communications go from hanging white bed sheets to relatives across the valley when a baby cam.e or help needed, to crank phones, party lines, cell phones, email and her existing voice to digital printout room phone
12.) She has a quirky sense of humor and still remembers her past entertaining everyone with her funny stories
13.) Her father survived the 1918 Spanish Flu when she was a baby, and she has survived COVID twice.
14.) She resides at the Seasons Place assisted living in Lewisburg and enjoys telephone calls and visitors.
15.) She presently enjoys Scrabble, corn hole and bingo.
16.) She regularly attends devotions and exercise classes.
17.) She has written poetry and still writes letters and cards to those she loves.
18.) She prays for worldwide love and peace.
