When most people think of the State Fair of West Virginia, they think of food and traditions.
One local organization wants you to think about ice cream when you are craving fair food.
The Maxwelton Ruritan Club, a local civic organization, has been serving hand-dipped ice cream on the fairgrounds for almost 40 years.
The volunteers started in a small trailer by the cattle barns and then grew into a more modernized building at the same location.
The bright yellow building has plenty of large windows to serve customers.
Larry Bowman, president of the club, says, “most of our customers go out of their way to visit our stand. They return each year because they know that their money stays in the community.”
All the proceeds stay in the local Maxwelton area and are used for scholarships for Greenbrier East High School students, donations to local organizations and fire departments.
“This past year we gave cash donations to CASA, Family Refuge Center, Project graduation, Greenbrier Youth Camp, Greenbrier East HOSA and Penny Pitch, to name a few. Along with monetary donations the members volunteer their time to help build ramps for senior citizens, maintain the Maxwelton Post Office flower bed, and participate with the Adopt A Highway along Route 219,” said Bowman.
The club has funded many projects over the years, but the favorite among the members is purchasing fire hydrants for the community.
“In 2021, our club purchased three fire hydrants that were installed by the city of Lewisburg along Vago Road. Most people don’t realize that outside of city limits fire hydrants are usually placed by local residents. We thought it would be a great project for our club. Not only does it help local residents save on their homeowners insurance, the hydrants could save a life,” said Bowman.
Since last year, three additional fire hydrants have been purchased and installed.
Local business Almost Heaven Saunas heard about the efforts of the club to raise money for the hydrants and donated a sauna for a giveaway on Aug. 25. Tickets can be purchased at the concession stand or by calling 304-646-4453.
“We are grateful for the generous donation by Almost Heaven Saunas as this will allow us to continue to buy additional fire hydrants. Our goal is to purchase twelve hydrants and continue along Vago road and the Maxwelton area,” said Bowman.
The cost for each hydrant is $3,000 which includes installation by the city of Lewisburg.

Handmade milkshakes are a favorite for customers because all the different flavors of ice cream can be used.
