LEWISBURG (WVDN) -Young writers and great spellers were celebrated by the board of education Tuesday night.
The West Virginia Young Writers competition and Greenbrier County spelling bee winners were announced by Ann Smith, director of elementary education, during the time out for applause section of the Mar. 8 meeting of the Greenbrier County Board of Education.
The board first celebrated the county’s spelling bee winners.
“I am so proud of this young man, [Merlin Durham of Crichton Elementary], because it’s very rare that we have anybody from an elementary school beat some out middle school [students],” Smith said. “Then, in first place, we have a returner winning for the second year in a row. Ean Hudnall [of Eastern Greenbrier Middle School] was first place in the county.”
The board celebrated their wins with a photo and post to the Greenbrier County Schools’ Facebook page.
“The purpose of the National Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives,” reads the post. “We are GCS proud of our county winner and runner-up!”

That’s not the only language-based competition the board celebrated Tuesday night – next came the West Virginia Young Writers winners.
Smith introduced these students as well.
“This is another one of my favorites – I’m a writer and I love writing,” Smith said. “I was so pleased this year because we had so many more entries. I hope next year we’ll have even more. … I want to tell [the board that] all that all of these stories are excellent.”
The winners include:
– Grade 1-2 Category: Sawyer Blankenship, Crichton Elementary
– Grade 3-4 Category: Kennedy Carter, Lewisburg Elementary
– Grade 5-6 Category: Ellie Burns, WSS Elementary
– Grade 9-10 Category: Peyton Barker, Greenbrier East High
“Even though the state doesn’t do it, we in Greenbrier County recognize our kindergarten winner. That was Lincoln Keaton [from Lewisburg Elementary],” Smith said.
