The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans made quick work of the Oak Hill Red Devils in the Class AAAA Region 3, Section 2 matchup on Wednesday night, Feb. 23, at the Spartan gym in Fairlea with a 71-41 victory in front of a large crowd.
With the victory, the Spartans will now play Woodrow Wilson this Friday night, Feb. 26 in the sectional championship game.
Brooke Davis got the scoring started for East when she knocked down a corner 3-pointer. Later in the opening quarter, with East up 4-3, it turned into the Cadence Stewart and Daisha Summers show. Stewart netted five points in a row, then Summers scored seven of the next nine around a Layla Pence jumper.
After one, East led 22-8.
Stewart hit a trey to open the second and then weaved her way to a couple more buckets for a 29-12 Spartan lead with 4:35 remaining in the first half.
She then scored the last eight points of the half as the Spartans took a dominating 39-14 lead into the break.
Stewart and Summers combined for 33 of the 39 first half points.
It was more of the same in the second half.
Summers and Stewart controlled the game, Allie Dunford played well, and Josie Patterson shot it well from deep in the waning minutes when she hit two 3-pointers to secure an East win and a visit from the Flying Eagles.
Unofficially, Stewart finished with 25 points. Summers had 20.
East lost their only meeting with Beckley this season just a few weeks ago on Jan. 31, 55-50. The Spartans will look to avenge that loss in hopes of moving on and hosting a regional contest next week.
