LEWISBURG (WVDN) — The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans beat the Oak Hill Red Devils 84-49 back in early January. On Tuesday, February 8, East traveled to Oak Hill and won again, but this time it was a little tougher with the Spartans coming out on top 68-58.
Cadence Stewart got the first field goal for the Spartans when she sank a right-wing three to put the Spartans up 3-1 just a minute into the game. Daisha Summers then scored off her own rebound, hit a shot in the paint then got a steal and made an uncontested layup for a 9-5 Spartan lead.
East’s pressure defense really started to bother the Red Devils as they secured several steals that they converted into points. A full-court pass from Stewart to Summers gave the latter 10 points in the quarter. Oak Hill fought back, and when they broke the Spartans’ press, they scored some easy buckets in transition. However, Taylor Boswell went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line including making two after the buzzer to end the quarter as East led 19-15 after one. Taja Gray hit a 3-pointer to open the second quarter scoring then she broke free for a transition bucket, and Oak Hill took a quick 20-19 lead. Summers found a wide-open Pence with 4:30 to go for a layup that tied the game at 22-all.
A couple minutes later, Oak Hill’s Samaya Lynch scored inside but Boswell answered with a nice runner on the other end. After the halftime dust settled, the Spartans led 34-28 at the break. Summers had 12 points and eight rebounds at that point. The Spartans extended their lead out to 46-34 halfway through the third, but the Red Devils, showing their improvement from the first meeting, kept battling and cut it down to six after Lynch’s basket inside, Jordan Harris’ layup and a Lynch free throw.
East led 51-43 heading into the final quarter. The Spartans scored the first six points in that fourth period capped by Allie Dunford’s dagger 3-pointer from the top of the key. East played even basketball the rest of the way and sealed the victory.
Stewart led East with 18 points and eight rebounds and was named Magic’s Computer Repair player of the game. Summers had 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Davis had 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Dunford added 12 points. Lynch led Oak Hill with 29 points.
The Spartans will head to Princeton for a pivotal matchup with the Tigers on Friday night, February 11.
