ALDERSON (WVDN) — Stacy Eskins of Alderson and Alderson Main Street’s goal to install a new town clock is a success. The new clock is at the foot of the walking bridge connecting the Greenbrier and Monroe County sides of Alderson.
On August 18, 2021, Eskins announced on Facebook that the project had reached its fundraising goal with $16,576.84 raised and in the bank. Work began in October, and on February 10, the clock was installed.
“It’s a day many have been eagerly anticipating and what a gorgeous day it was for the clock to arrive,” Eskins wrote on Facebook on February 9. “I have to say, it turned out perfect – not only the clock, but the entire site looks so inviting. What a wonderful way to welcome residents and visitors alike to the heart of town. I truly hope everyone enjoys and takes pride in this beautiful addition to Alderson.”
The clock is a Howard Replica II (4Z, Two Dials), 10 feet, 10 inches tall, with an LED backlit, 24-inch diameter clockface. The weather-proof clock’s header reads “Est. 1777 – Town of Alderson.”
“I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough to those who made this all possible!” wrote Eskins. “This project was completely, 100 percent funded by donations made by caring individuals who want to see improvements made in Alderson. All donations were made through Alderson Main Street, a US 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.”
Mayor Travis Copenhaver noted during the October 2021 Town Council meeting that “the clock is not funded from the municipal funds at all. Nor is the work. Main Street, who is our best business partner ever, was able to come up with $20,000. They will cover the project 100 percent.”
Eskins also thanked those who worked on the clock and fundraiser, including 180 private and corporate donors, Alderson Main Street, the town of Alderson, construction site manager Lewis Halstead, concrete provider Tony Cole and Tony Cole Construction, electrical provider Gill Merritt and Merritt Electric, brick mason Antonio Lopez, landscaper TerraCare, Canterbury Designs, and the Verdin Company.
Edit – This story initially identified Ms. Eskins as the Alderson City Recorder. This is not the case – Ms. Betty Thomas is the recorder. I apologize for the confusion this may have caused.
