MEADOW BRIDGE (WVDN) — The Greenbrier West girls basketball team completed a season sweep of border-rival Meadow Bridge on Friday, Feb. 4, with a 55-35 win. Freshmen Maddie Fields and Preslee Treadway led the Lady Cavaliers with 19 and 18 points, respectively. The Cavaliers improved to 7-10 as they inch closer to sectional play.
Sierra Simmons staked the Wildcats out to an early 2-0 lead with a long-ranger jumper from the left side, but Raelyn Palmer erased it on the Cavaliers’ next possession with a three-pointer that hit nothing but net. Palmer added to the lead by knocking down the front end of a one-and-one, but the Wildcats Kierston Rozell answered with a corner three for a 5-4 Meadow Bridge advantage. Fields got the Cavaliers headed back in the right direction with a frontcourt steal that led to a layup, but Simmons responded for the Wildcats with a corner three to push Meadow Bridge back into the lead. Palmer stepped up and drilled a straight-away three to retake the lead for the Cavaliers, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the night. The Lady Cavaliers would surge ahead to a 19-9 first quarter lead.
Treadway would lead the Cavaliers in the second quarter with five points to leave her with eleven at the halftime break. Fields’ four second quarter points gave her nine at the half. Rozell, the Wildcats’ leading scorer on the night, had eleven points in the first half but the Cavaliers held a 34-19 halftime lead.
Treadway’s six points carried the Cavaliers through the third quarter, with Abigail Thomas and Fields adding a bucket each. The Wildcats matched Greenbrier West with ten third quarter points. Charity Reichard went 4-4 from the foul-line and Rozell added four more for Meadow Bridge. Greenbrier West’s lead stood at 44-29 at the end of three quarters.
Fields outscored the Wildcats 8-6 herself in the fourth quarter. Palmer added the other Cavalier basket. Amber Stickler knocked down one of four Meadow Bridge three-pointers and Rozell nailed down her final basket in the fourth.
