FAIRLEA- The Greenbrier East Spartans men’s soccer team opened regional tournament play in dominating fashion, rolling past Herbert Hoover 10-0 to advance to the next round of postseason action.

John Withrow led the offensive explosion with four goals and an assist, while August Vincent delivered an impressive performance of his own with three goals and an assist. Jeb Brown, Corbin Long and Lewie Lutz each added a goal to round out the Spartans’ scoring.

Long also helped create opportunities for his teammates, finishing with two assists, while Carson Black contributed an assist. Defensively, Greenbrier East was just as impressive, shutting down the Huskies’ attack throughout the contest. Goalkeepers Drew Brown and Luke White combined to preserve the clean sheet.

“I’ve got another good group that certainly has the ability to make another run in AAA, head coach Lucas Lemine said.

“Our defining quality will be our ability to play a full 80 minutes of consistently sound soccer.”

The convincing victory keeps the Spartans’ hopes alive as they move one step closer to a regional championship and a potential berth in the state tournament.

“We talked yesterday that the right to continue to play after tonight is earned not given and I’m hoping that resonates with the group and we are able to continue to practice and play together after tonight,” Lemine added on Tuesday afternoon.
