After their stay at the Greenbrier Hotel, which provides a more luxurious lifestyle than most trips, the San Francisco 49ers went into Philadelphia and defeated the Eagles 17-11 on Sunday, Sept. 19.
In the defensive-minded contest, the 49ers got just enough offense to move to 2-0 on the young season.
San Francisco spent the week in White Sulphur Springs preparing for the task of limiting talented Eagles quarterback, Jalen Hurts. Hurts, known more for his legs, was coming off an impressive performance against the Atlanta Falcons where he completed 27-of-35 passes for 264 yards and three TD’s.
The preparation must have worked to perfection as the Niners defense stymied Hurts all day and held him to just 190 yards and no touchdowns on 12-of-23 passing. He was sacked twice as well by Nick Bosa.
Offense was not easy for the 49ers either as they totaled just 306 yards, but quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw for a touchdown and ran for another to offset the other struggles.
With :12 seconds left in the first half, Garoppolo found Jauan Jennings for an 11-yard touchdown and a 7-3 halftime lead. That drive lasted 12 plays for 97 yards and marked Jennings’s first catch of his young career.
Garoppolo scored on a 1-yard sneak in the fourth quarter and then the defense stood tall the rest of the way as San Francisco sealed the win.
Garoppolo threw for 189 yards and ran for 20. Deebo Samuel had six catches for 93 yards.
It remains to be seen if the 2022 schedule will allow San Francisco to return for what would be their third consecutive year, but if it does, it is almost a guarantee they will lobby for it as their performance after the stay seems to work out well for them.
