WINFIELD- The winless Greenbrier East Spartans knew it would be tough in Putnam County and unfortunately, they were not wrong as the Spartans fell to 0-5 on the season following a 54-7 setback to the Winfield Generals on Friday night, September 25.
Winfield took control early with Jared Miller, Gannon Boggs, and Aiden Tate and carried a 42-7 lead into halftime in the two teams’ first-ever matchup.
After the Generals opened up an early 14-0 lead, the Spartans answered with a 29-yard touchdown catch by Braylen Godfrey from Sam Gabbert to tie the game at 7-7.
And that would be the only time the end zone was found by the green and gold.
Winfield then pulled away with a series of rushing and passing scores, including touchdown runs by Miller and Boggs and a scoring pass to Tate. Those big three made it difficult all night on Greenbrier East.
The Generals (2-2) continued to control the game after halftime, managing the clock as they secured an impressive win.
East managed just 133 total yards (51 rushing) compared to 413 for the Generals.
Boggs got 101 yards on the ground and Tate had five grabs for 86 yards.
The Spartans will travel to Shady Spring on Friday, October 2 looking for that first victory against the Tigers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
