BEAVER- Greenbrier West Cross Country continued its season Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Shady Spring Invitational at Little Beaver State Park, where the Cavaliers’ three-runner squad took on a competitive field and continued making strides as the season moves forward.
The Cavaliers were represented by seniors Jesse Walkup and Dominic Mandeville in the boys’ 5,000-meter race and freshman Kaylee Walkup in the girls’ event.
Walkup led Greenbrier West on the boys’ side, turning in a season-best time of 20:05.0 to finish 18th among 67 runners. Mandeville followed with a milestone of his own, recording a season-best 23:38.3 and finishing 54th in the 67-runner field. For Mandeville, each race this season carries significance beyond the stopwatch. The senior returned to competition this fall after undergoing knee surgery in April, making his way back onto the cross country course following months of recovery and work. Saturday’s season-best performance marked another step forward in that comeback.
On the girls’ side, freshman Kaylee Walkup continued gaining valuable experience during her first high school season. Walkup completed the 5K course in 31:17.8, placing 22nd among 34 runners. With two seniors and one freshman making up the Greenbrier West roster, this year’s team finds itself at two very different points in the high school journey.
Jesse Walkup and Mandeville are competing in their final season in Cavalier blue and gold, while Kaylee Walkup is only beginning to write her high school cross country story. But the story of this year’s Cavaliers cannot be told solely through finishing times and placements. Cross country may be scored as an individual sport, but behind Greenbrier West’s three runners is a support system that has made this small team feel anything but small.
Coach Christian has taken leading by example quite literally. Rather than simply sending his athletes out to complete their miles, he can often be found running alongside them—sharing the course, the hills and the work he asks of his runners. It is one thing for a coach to tell an athlete to keep going when the miles get difficult. It is another to lace up a pair of running shoes and be right there beside them. That dedication extends beyond the coach.

Christian’s wife, Michelle, has become another constant presence for the team. While she may not have an official title beside her name, she continues to show up for these athletes—supporting them, encouraging them and making sure they have another familiar face in their corner. Those are the moments that never appear in official race results. There are no statistics for the person standing along the course offering encouragement. There is no finishing time for the coach who runs beside an athlete during training, and there is no column on a results sheet measuring the support that keeps a young runner moving forward when the miles become difficult.

But those things matter.
For Jesse Walkup and Dominic Mandeville, the remaining races of 2026 are part of the final chapter of their Greenbrier West cross-country careers. For Kaylee Walkup, they are the opening pages of hers. And somewhere between the senior running his final season, the freshman learning what it takes, the coach willing to share the miles and the people who continue showing up along the course is what this Greenbrier West team is really about.
Three runners. Two seniors. One freshman. One team—and a whole lot of heart behind every mile.
