CHARMCO- Despite the 28-6 final, last Friday’s loss to Liberty is just one game in what has otherwise been a strong start to the 2026 season for Greenbrier West.
The Cavaliers (2-1) opened the year with back-to-back victories over Wirt County and Summers County before suffering their first loss of the season against the Raiders.
Now sitting at 2-1, West will look to put the loss behind them and get back into the win column. The Cavaliers will hit the road this Friday, Sept. 18, traveling to Dunmore to take on the Pocahontas County Warriors (1-2). Pocahontas County enters the matchup at 1-2 on the season. The Warriors opened their year with a 31-16 victory over Tucker County before dropping consecutive games to Meadow Bridge and Bath County.
For Greenbrier West, Friday night provides an opportunity to respond. After two convincing wins to begin the season and their first taste of adversity against Liberty, the Cavaliers will look to regroup, get back on track, and bring another victory home to Charmco.
West will look for a big game from star junior running back Ben Butler who has toted the rock 37 times for 474 yards through the first three contests. That’s 12.8 yards per carry. If Butler gets loose frequently, it will be a long night for the Warriors.
Kickoff between the Cavaliers and Warriors is scheduled for 7:00 PM Friday at Warrior Field.
Prediction:
As stated above, Butler is the key in this one as he is in most of the Greenbrier West matchups. Defenses, however, make their entire gameplan to slow him down. If–and it’s a big if–they are successful with that approach, Greenbrier West has other weapons to throw. Vinson and Vaxtan Vaughan, Karsten Burns, Shane Plogger, Isaiah Coleman, and more can rally around each other and provide enough firepower to get the job done.
