CHARMCO- The Greenbrier West Cavaliers golf program is moving forward under new leadership as its new head coach, Ben Weikle, begins his first season at the helm.
The coach is looking forward to working with a roster that includes both returning golfers and newcomers, with an emphasis not only on improving their game, but also on building confidence, sportsmanship and pride in the program.
“I am excited to begin my journey as the Head Golf Coach at GWHS,” Weikle said. “I look forward to working with both returning players and newcomers to develop their golf skills while growing in confidence and sportsmanship.
Creating a positive and supportive atmosphere for every member of the team is also a major priority.
“My goal is to create a positive and supportive environment where every player has the opportunity to improve and enjoy the game,” the coach added.
“I can’t wait to see what this team can accomplish.” That philosophy is reflected in the Cavaliers’ team motto: “Play the course, not your opponent. One shot at a time. Swing with purpose. Finish with pride.” The motto serves as a reminder for the Cavaliers to concentrate on what they can control, remain focused from one shot to the next and represent Greenbrier West with pride regardless of the competition.
The Cavaliers have already worked their way through much of their 2026 schedule, but several matches remain as the team heads into the final weeks of the regular season and prepares for postseason competition.
The remainder of Greenbrier West’s schedule is: * Sept. 16 — Midland Trail, 9 holes, 4 p.m. * Sept. 21 — Richwood, 9 holes at Richwood, 4 p.m. * Sept. 24 — James Monroe, 9 holes at Fountain Springs, 4 p.m. * Sept. 28 — Greenbrier West, 9 holes at Rainelle, 4 p.m. * Oct. 1 — Nicholas County, 18 holes at Summersville, 4 p.m. * Oct. 5 — Regionals, 18 holes at Pipestem.
With a new coach leading the way and a combination of returning players and newcomers continuing to develop, Greenbrier West will look to finish the season strong and carry that progress into regional competition. For the Cavaliers, the approach remains simple: play the course, take it one shot at a time, swing with purpose and finish with pride.
