CHARLESTON, W.Va. / MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WVDN) – Three Vandalia Health hospitals have been recognized by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Network of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, making Vandalia Health one of only five health systems in the nation — and the first and only in West Virginia — to earn the designation.

The designation includes Vandalia Health CAMC Memorial Hospital and Vandalia Health CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital in Charleston and Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center in Morgantown, each of which has earned SRC’s Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery designation. Across the three hospitals, 14 surgeons hold SRC’s Surgeon of Excellence in Robotic Surgery designation.

SRC awards its Network of Excellence designation to healthcare systems with multiple hospitals that have achieved Center of Excellence accreditation in the same specialty and demonstrate rigorous standards for quality, patient safety and continuous improvement.

The SRC Network of Excellence recognition builds on nearly two decades of robotic surgery innovation across the hospitals that now make up Vandalia Health. CAMC Memorial Hospital, CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital and Mon Medical Center have advanced robotic surgery in West Virginia through investments in technology, specialized operating room infrastructure that supports high-volume single-port robotic surgery and pioneering minimally invasive procedures. Together, the hospitals have also expanded remote training and collaboration capabilities, allowing Vandalia Health surgeons to educate physicians and surgical teams from across the United States and around the world in advanced robotic surgical techniques.

“This recognition reflects years of investment in our robotic surgery programs and the collaboration of exceptional physicians, nurses and surgical teams across Vandalia Health,” said Jeff Sandene, President and CEO of Vandalia Health. “By bringing together the expertise and resources of our hospitals, we’re expanding access to advanced surgical care and creating opportunities to share best practices across our system. Becoming one of only five Networks of Excellence in the nation is an extraordinary milestone and a testament to what our teams have built together.”

Robotic-assisted surgery allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with enhanced visualization, precision and control. Depending on the procedure, patients may experience benefits such as smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. Robotic surgery is now performed at 22 Vandalia Health hospitals, expanding access to advanced minimally invasive care across the region.

“Building a successful robotic surgery program takes investment in infrastructure, physician training, dedicated surgical teams and a shared commitment to quality,” said Samuel Deem, DO, MBA, Urologist, Vandalia Health CAMC. “As we’ve expanded robotic surgery across multiple Vandalia Health hospitals, our goal has remained the same — to give more patients access to advanced minimally invasive care while delivering a consistent, high standard of excellence.”

Healthcare facilities and surgeons seeking SRC accreditation undergo a comprehensive assessment and inspection process evaluating areas including surgical volumes, equipment, clinical pathways, patient education and continuous quality improvement.

“Innovation is at the heart of robotic surgery,” said Jaschar Shakuri-Rad, DO, FACOS, Medical Director of Robotic Surgery and Master Surgeon, Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center. “Whether we’re pioneering new robotic procedures, collaborating on new technologies or helping train surgeons around the world, our focus is always on improving patient care. That’s what makes the Network of Excellence recognition especially meaningful.”

“We’re proud to recognize Vandalia Health for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this health system is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
