MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WVDN) — A West Virginia University doctoral research study is examining how elementary teachers in Appalachia perceive STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and how those perceptions influence their engagement with STEM in the classroom.
The study, led by Susie A. Huggins in the WVU School of Education & Counseling under the supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Scott Carver, invites elementary teachers who are 18 years of age or older and currently teach an elementary grade in Appalachia to participate in an online survey.
The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete and asks teachers about their perceptions of STEM and their experiences incorporating STEM into classroom instruction. Findings from the study may help educators and researchers better understand opportunities and challenges related to STEM education in Appalachian elementary schools.
Participation is voluntary, and responses will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law. Participants may skip questions or stop participating at any time. The study has been reviewed by the West Virginia University Institutional Review Board (STUDY00000231).
