LAWRENCE, KS (WVDN)- The 15th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers baseball team must have flown into Lawrence, KS this weekend on brooms and then got them back out, because the Mountaineers swept the number 7 Jayhawks 4-1, 5-2, and 13-2 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
West Virginia (34-12, 19-8) got great pitching from starters Maxx Yehl and Chansen Cole, and the bullpen combination of Ian Korn and Reese Bassinger were just as effective in their outings as well, and the Mountaineers completed one of the best series wins around the nation.
Gavin Kelly stayed hot at the plate, Sean Smith homered Sunday, and Paul Schoenfeld, a Kansas native playing in front of dozens of friends and family, homered as well and played incredible defense all weekend.
The sweep moved WVU to 17th in the RPI with just three games remaining in the regular season, a 3-game series with TCU in Morgantown this weekend.
If WVU can just win the series, they will be a heavy favorite to host a regional NCAA tournament game in Morgantown in a couple weeks.
Kansas dropped to 37-14, 20-7.
