Governor Gaston Caperton announced 10 Governor’s Community Partnership Grants to fund various projects.
In Greenbrier County, a grant for $15,000 was awarded to acquire and renovate the former C&O Railroad Station in Alderson. A federal transportation enhancement grant will provide an additional $60,000.

Barry L. Level recently graduated from leadership training and evaluation at the U.S. Army Cadet Command Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) advance camp at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, NC.
He is the son of William P. and Lola L. Level of Ronceverte and is a graduate of Greenbrier East High School in 1989.

Samuel W. Yates has been named to the panel of judges for the 1996 Miss Parkersburg Homecoming Pageant, to be held August 15 and 16 in Parkersburg.

Lori Ann Judy, daughter of Clarence and Sue Judy of Ronceverte, was honored by being included in Who’s Who Among American Students for the third consecutive year.
She is a 1996 graduate of Greenbrier East High School.

Alan Ross of Lewisburg was named to Indiana University Bloomington’s Founder’s Day list for academic excellence for semester II, 1995-96. The Founder’s Day list was formerly called the dean’s list.

The 1996 Carnegie Hall Volunteers of the Year are Dr. Mary Ann Mann, D.V.M., M.S., and Dr. Larry Davis, both of Lewisburg.

Recently Martha A. Ramsey was honored by ABB Process Analytics Inc. at a retirement luncheon held at Western Sizzlin.
She started to work at The Bendix Corporation in June 1966.

Navy Seaman Basil A. Casey, son of Paul A. and Nancy L. Jackson of Lewisburg, returned to his homeport at Norfolk, VA, after completing a 6-month deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.

On July 30, George R. Hanna of Lewisburg was presented with a 50-year service pin from both the Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons and the Grand Commandery Knights Templar.

Anthony W. Bayles has joined the U.S. Army Reserve under the Delayed Enlistment Program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station, Princeton.
He is the son of Tamara J. Bayles of Alderson.

50 Years Ago…
Bids were opened in Charleston Tuesday on 2.59 miles of I-64 from Sam Black Church northeastward to near Clintonville for grading, draining, portland cement concrete pavement, signing, and structures. S.J. Groves and Sons Company of Minneapolis, Minn., were the low bidders with $4,883,729.

Selection of students for the 76 places in the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s 1971 first-year class has been completed by the Student Admissions Committee.
Houston Burger Moore Jr. of Lewisburg was the only one from Greenbrier County.

Auto Springs & Bearing Company, wholesale automotive parts distributors of Roanoke, Va., has leased the old bus terminal room on South Court Street from Bill Bowling of White Sulphur Springs. They plan to open within the next few days.
Elmer Johnson of Lewisburg has been employed as local manager.

Jeanette Albaugh of Lewisburg has moved to Charleston where she is employed as a commercial artist for the C&P Telephone Company.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Albaugh.

Mrs. Ruth Persinger, Mrs. Joanne Lilly, and Mrs. Eileen Shumacher conducted and judged the 4-H Dog Show under the grandstand at the state fairgrounds.

Seventy high school students participated last week in the 11th annual High School Journalism Institute at West Virginia University.
Among the students attending the institute was Margaret Hellems, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hellems of Quinwood.

Over 150 pharmacists gathered at The Greenbrier for the 64th annual convention of the West Virginia Pharmaceutical Association.
William S. Coleman Jr. was installed president of the state association.

Three nice trout have been taken during the summer months from Mulligans Creek by Burr Shaver of Lewisburg. They measured 15, 17 and 20 inches. The largest weighed 4 pounds.

75 Years Ago…
Bids will be opened August 26 by the Huntington District U.S. Engineers on the clearing of 500 acres of land at the site of Bluestone Dam on the New River near Hinton.

Guy B. Montgomery of Ronceverte was among those who were given premier exhibitor awards for the highest scoring herds in the 25th annual State Dairy Show at Jackson’s Mill, Lewis County.

Miss Helen Smithson of Alderson came home August 10 from Concord College, Athens, where she attended the 10-week summer term, taking a course in psychology.

A dog belonging to John Alderman of Big Draft Road began barking at a pile of brush near the Alderman home last week. Mr. Alderman investigated and found a den of nine rattlesnakes ranging in size from 3 feet to 52 inches; the largest having 19 rattles. All of them were killed.

100 Years Ago…
The recent drive, directed at Alderson by Dr. Divine, to raise $60,000 for a new church building for the Old Greenbrier Baptist congregation and $15,000 for the Alderson Baptist Academy, resulted in a total of $77,000 being pledged.

The published report of prohibition activities in West Virginia during July includes 64 moonshine still destroyed and more than 14,000 gallons of liquor confiscated.

Failure to adjust domestic differences outside of court has resulted in the Greenbrier Hotel of Ronceverte being placed in the hands of a receiver under an order entered by Judge Sharp in Greenbrier Circuit Court at a special term.
