MARTINSBURG/HEDGESVILLE- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans –Class AAA no. 1–made the long trek to Martinsburg on Friday night and then followed that trip with a 15-minute ride over to Hedgesville on Saturday and in the process, picked up two more wins and stayed undefeated on this 2026 season.

East beat Martinsburg 51-35, their second win over the Lady Bulldogs in a little over a week and disposed of the Lady Eagles 62-36.

In both contests, the Lady Spartans jumped out to big leads early and never trailed the whole weekend at any point.

On Friday, East’s Kennedy Stewart didn’t have her usual hot shooting night and finished with just seven points, although she did contribute heavily in other areas. Instead, on that night, it was Ava Workman who stepped up and carried the offensive load and finished with a game high 27 points. She was the only Spartan in double figures.

Greenbrier East jumped out to a 19-2 lead on Hedgesville in the first quarter and obviously never looked back. That lead grew to 35-10 at the break as East cruised to an easy win.

It was Workman again leading the way with 14 points. Stewart netted 11 and dished out 6 assists and had 3 steals. Sandy Banton finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds.

As a team, East shot 9-of-18 from 3-point land and 43 percent overall.

The ladies get a few days of game rest and will be back on the court at Nicholas County this Friday, Jan. 16.

FAIRLEA- Talking about making things look easy.

The Greenbrier East boys’ team, ranked 5th in Class AAA, did just that against an overmatched and outmanned Giles Spartans team out of Virginia as the West Virginia Spartans controlled everything from start to finish, including multiple dunks throughout the night, and secured a 51-point, 83-32 victory.

Darius Burns scored the first five points of the game for East and a couple possessions later, had a nice assist to Gabe Neal. Then, a Nathan Dixon dunk followed by Brody Hamric’s bucket had Greenbrier East up 14-4 quickly. Hamric put back an offensive board at the first quarter buzzer and East led 18-9 after one.

Brodrik Gunter’s 3 got the second quarter off on the right foot. Dixon scored immediately after that and then Gunter got a steal and score to make it 25-9. Later in the second, with the Spartans up 33-12, Hamric and Braylen Godfrey had back-to-back dunks then Gunter buried another trey to send the Spartans to the promise land of an easy win.

East shot 49 percent from the field.

Godfrey and Dixon each had 17 points to lead East. Hamric netted 13 and Gunter and Dubya Vickers both scored 10. Eloi Castillo played really well in the fourth quarter on both ends and ended with 6 points as well.

Giles had nine different players score but no player scored more than 7 points.

The East boys will be at Princeton on Tuesday.
