SHADY SPRING- Greenbrier East was cruising to a 6-1 lead after three-and-a-half innings on Thursday night at Shady Spring, but the Tigers would score eight unanswered runs over the next three frames to secure a 9-6 victory, leaving the Spartans still winless, albeit just after two games.

The Spartans got an RBI single from Sam Roshau in the top of the first inning that scored Nelson Lynch and then the next batter, DP Seams, singled and Roshau scored on an error from the field. East would get two more runs from Seams and Bo Bundy for a 4-0 lead after the top of the first frame.

East added a run in the second on another Roshau RBI base hit and in the third when Sonny Herbert scored on a dropped third strike. At that point, it was 6-1, Spartans.

In the bottom of the fifth, with the Spartans leading 6-4, one at-bat pretty much changed the game. Shady’s Noah Redman was at the plate and Sam Barnett scored on a passed ball that trimmed the East lead to 6-5. Then, Redman singled home two runs and the Tigers (2-0) took a 1-run lead after five.

They added two more for good measure to seal the deal in the sixth on three consecutive doubles.

The Spartans had two runners on in the seventh but struck out to end the night.

Roshau went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI to lead Greenbrier East. Josiah Spencer had two hits and Lynch scored two runs.

Lynch started on the mound and lasted 4.2 innings and scattered seven hits. He gave up seven runs (six earned), walked five, and struck out seven. Seams came on in relief and allowed three hits and two runs in 0.1 innings.

The Spartans (0-2) will open the home part of their schedule this Saturday, March 28 when they host the Musselman Applemen in a double header beginning at 1:00 PM.
