Many Added Features For Fair
The paramount single feature of the fair will be the Grand Parade. The parade is to be complete in every detail – everything on the grounds that can move or walk will be seen. The parade will be headed by Victor’s band, followed by the national colors, with Company F of the 150 th Infrantry, National Guard. This will be the first public appearance of the local guard company.
As Simple As A Grindstone
From Poland comes word of an astonishing sort of automobile. It is designed to bring about the utmost simplicity and speed in making repairs and replacement of parts. In a recent test two mechanics and a helper took down the motor, gear-set, universal and rear axle in 14 minutes, and had their car completely re-assembled in 36 additional minutes. The car has a six-cylinder motor, develops 45 horsepower, and is said to be capable of a speed of more than a mile a minute.

End Relations With Russians
Immediate severance of diplomatic relations with Russia was urged by Rep. Dague (R., Pa.) in remarks published in the Congressional Record. “Certainly a review of history will reveal that we have repeatedly withdrawn our diplomats from other countries when the provocation was not half so great, and it seems to me as only a logical conclusion that we should without hesitation sever all ties with the Kremlin and thus announce to the world that we will no longer traffic with these international pariahs,” Dague said.
Fair Opens August 21
The State Fair of West Virginia opens August 21 for six great days and six big nights. New accommodations include one- fourth added capacity to the grandstand, new medical and first- aid center and new, modern and sanitary toilet facilities. The carnival and midway areas have been levelled and grassed.
Film Festival Week
The management of the Lewis Theatre, Lewisburg, has gone all out for a big program of late releases of pictures for their second annual Film Festival Week. Opening Saturday with a late 11:30 p.m. show will be “Ecstasy,” starring Heddy Lemarr. Then will follow, “Broken Arrow,” starring James Stewart and in technicolor. Opening Sunday through Wednesday will bring you “Caribou Trail,” in cinecolor starring Randolph Scott and Gabby Hayes. Ending this big week will be a double feature “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” starring Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney plus the popular star Gene Autry and Champion in “Mule Train.”

Show Gets Standing Ovation
The Buck Owens Show starring Buck Owens, Jan Howard and the Buckeroos received a standing ovation following the two performances of the group Saturday night at the West Virginia State Fair. Owens says, “He doesn’t feel he has done his job unless he receives an ovation.”
Man Finds Large Diamond
A retired maintenance man scrounged through the hard solid dirt and came up with a 16.37-karat diamond, the largest stone found in more than 20 years at the only diamond mine site in North America. W. E. Johnson 62, of Amarillo, Tex., found the diamond after two hours of digging at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas.
Says Ford Looks Good
Former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter said President Ford only looks good when compared to Richard Nixon or Congress. The President, Carter said, “looks good in two respects – his integrity as compared to Richard Nixon’s and his administrative ability as compared to Congress.”

Lewisburg’s Director Of Public Works Tenders Resignation
With little comment from city officials, it was revealed at council meeting that Lewisburg’s director of public works, Herb Montgomery, had tendered his resignation. Former Mayor F. B. “Duke” Fouch addressed the council concerning the matter early in the session. “This is a concern to me,” Fouch stated. He told council that having had the opportunity to work with Montgomery for four years, he feels the city is losing a valuable employee. He urged the council to “not act hastily” and accept Montgomery’s resignation, but asked them to instead “seek reconsideration.”
Harvey Wins Bread Competition
Jamie Harvey of Lewisburg won the Fleischmann’s Yeast Best-Ever Bread competition at the 2000 State Fair of West Virginia. Harvey’s Cream Cheese Bread won her $120, plus a ribbon, an award certificate, and an apron.
Fair Takes A Stab At Jousting
The State Fair of West Virginia played host this year to the age- old sport of jousting. The Knights of the South Branch Valley, who hail from Hardy County, performed in a tournament in the grandstand. John Bowman, a rider who served as announcer for the event, explained that jousting is thought to have originated in the 11 th Century.
