Vs. Shady Spring- After two losses in their final two games in Myrtle Beach, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans made the most of their first two games back in the Mountain State on Saturday, April 11 when they completed a double header sweep defeating Shady Spring 11-4 and Capital 12-1.

Against the Tigers in the opener, Greenbrier East got great balance from their lineup and the pitching from Kennah Collins, along with the overall team defense, was superb.

East actually fell behind 4-0 after three innings, but in the top of the fifth frame, everything completely changed.

Reagan Cline’s double got things started and she moved up to third on Maddie Baker’s single. Then, Collins ripped a double to center that scored both and the Spartans trimmed the Shady lead to 4-2. Haylee Heaster then followed with another two-bagger and brought Collins home and Heaster would then score on a crucial Tiger error that knotted the score at 4-4 headed to the bottom of the fifth.

Collins then stepped up in the circle and retired the Tigers 1-2-3 to get the offensive lineup back into the batter’s box.

Bailee Cleghon’s single started the sixth and then two batters later, Norah Ambler’s RBI double gave the Lady Spartans their first lead, 5-4.

And that was just the beginning.

Cline would then single and she and Ambler scored quickly on Baker’s 2-run double. Then, with two outs and the Spartans leading 7-4, Campbell Bundy crushed a 3-run homerun to center field and Greenbrier East’s lead had grown to 10-4.

Cline added a run on an RBI double just for good measure in the top half of the seventh. Collins got Shady hitter Hollee Harper to fly out and end the game.

East finished with 18 hits. Cline was 4-5 with two runs and an RBI and Baker was also 4-5 with two runs and two RBI. Cleghon pounded out three hits as well.

Vs. Capital:

The Spartans did not slow down any in the nightcap. In fact, they kept right on rolling thanks in large part to Baker’s bat again that led East to the victory over the Cougars in just five innings.

The sophomore had another 4-hit day (4-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and pitchers Chloey Wykle and Maddie Wellman combined to allow just two hits and had nine strikeouts.

East took advantage of a couple crucial Capital errors, plus Baker’s RBI single that plated Cline, to jump out to a quick 4-o lead after one.

Baker’s RBI double and Collins run scoring single highlighted an impressive inning when the Lady Spartans scored five runs. Bundy also had an RBI double and Cleghon knocked a 2-run single that scored Bundy and Sydney Norman.

Anyway, the pitching the rest of the way was great, and Greenbrier East sealed the victory quite easily.

With the two wins, the Lady Spartans improved to 7-5 on the season.
