The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans had enjoyed a nice two-day break after their win over Bluefield last Wednesday.
Now the girls are in a stretch of six games in eight days and that began Saturday night, March 13, in Charleston against the George Washington Lady Patriots.
Having played some really thrilling contests over the past few years, this one got away from East early as the Patriots got the 76-52 victory.
The Spartans slow start proved to be too costly as they struggled early and continued to struggle to shoot the ball all afternoon long.
East (2-3) was down 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and 41-29 at halftime.
With a chance in the first five minutes of the second half to stick around and possibly make it a game, East had another slow start and was outscored 20-7 in the third period which was the deciding factor in the outcome.
Spartans shot just 29 percent from the floor although they were a solid 41 percent from the three-point range.
Cadence Stewart led the way for East with 22 points and six rebounds, but she was just 6-for-20 from the field. Allie Dunford added 12 points and five steals.
Kalissa Lacy led the Patriots (2-2) with 18 points and nine assists. Alaina Evans added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Finley Lohan had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
There is no time to fret over this one for the Spartans. After an off-day Sunday, East will play 5 games over the next six days starting tomorrow Monday, March 15 at Oak Hill.
