The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources has identified 232-new cases of COVID-19 and confirmed the deaths of eight additional residents as a result of the virus within the last 24-hours.
Among those confirmed, deceased are a 53-year-old Lewis County woman, a 66-year-old Mason County man, a 69-year-old Berkeley County man, an 80-year-old Tucker County man, a 64-year-old Boone County man, a 78-year-old Kanawha County man, a 60-year-old Marion County man and a 37-year-old Monongalia County woman.
In a statement posted to the DHHR’s website, Cabinet Secretary Bill Crouch said, “I offer my deepest sympathy to all those who are grieving these losses today.”
As of Wednesday, March 3, 2,309 West Virginians have succumbed to complications stemming from COVID-19.
Currently, 6,451 cases of the virus are active throughout the state. The daily positivity-rate is 3.13% and the cumulative positivity-rate is 5.43%. Thus far, 199,611 West Virginians have been fully vaccinated against the virus, while another 302,793 are awaiting their second dose.
With an infection rate of 16.46% and a percent positive of 5.26%, Pocahontas County is designated as orange on the DHHR color-coded County Alert System map for the second consecutive day. However, with an infection rate of 13.60% and a percent positive of 2.45%, Greenbrier County has been designated to green. Monroe County also remains designated as green on the map.
At present, 197 West Virginians are hospitalized with COVID-19, including the 60 being treated in area intensive care units and the 25 who are receiving assistance through ventilators. W.Va. DHHR reports that 123,656 residents who had previously been infected with the virus have since recovered.
