GAME 1: Greenbrier West 11 Webster Co. 0
CHARMCO- On Monday, April 1, the Class A 3rd ranked Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers swept a double-header in blowout fashion over the Webster County Lady Highlanders 11-0 and 9-1, but on the following Tuesday night, the Cavs fell to the no. 10 Buffalo Lady Bison 6-0.
In game one against the Highlanders, West got off to a quick and hot start as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Brooke Patterson’s bases clearing double was the highlight of the rally as the Cavs also took advantage of some Webster County errors in the field and walks from the pitcher’s circle.
A sac fly from Maddie Fields in the third ran the score to 8-0 and three extra runs in the fourth ended the contest quickly. Patterson laced another RBI double, Hannah Sweet, who also had a big day, knocked Patterson in on a single, and then Sweet scored herself on a passed ball to complete the scoring night for the Cavs.
The offense was more than enough for sophomore ace Brilee Redden. She went the full five innings, allowed just one hit and had 11 strikeouts.
Sweet and Patterson were huge on offense. Sweet went 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Patterson was 2-3 with 2 runs and 4 RBIs. Kyndall Taylor also knocked in 2 runs. Not to be outdone, Brooklyn Adkins also went 2-2 and scored 2 runs.
GAME 2: Greenbrier West 9 Webster Co. 1
Game two was more of the same.
Much like game one when Greenbrier West went up 7-0 after one, they led 6-0 after two innings in the nightcap.
After scoring on a couple errors in the opening frame, Taylor lined a single to centerfield that scored Preslee Treadway. Four straight hits to lead off the second got the Cavaliers rolling then as well. Diana Porter, Patterson, and Sweet all hit singles and Sweet’s scored two runs. Then, a double from Redden brought Sweet home and West built the 6-run lead.
Redden doubled again in her next plate appearance and senior Julia Herndon followed with a two-bagger also that scored Redden. Herndon would eventually score later in the frame on a passed ball.
Taylor picked up the win on the mound despite walking six batters. However, she only gave up 2 hits and had 7 strikeouts in five innings.
Sweet had her second 3-4 game with 2 runs scored and 3 driven in. Redden went 2-3 with a run and RBI. West had 10 hits in game two.
Buffalo 6 Greenbrier West 0
As good as the bats were in those two, on Tuesday vs. Buffalo, they were equally as quiet. The Cavaliers had just two hits in the game–singles from Fields and Adkins– and found it hard to hit the Bison’s Kimberly Dillman. Dillman fanned 11 Cav batters in a seven inning, complete game.
Redden also had 11 strikeouts for West but did issue 6 walks. She scattered 7 hits and 4 earned runs (6 total). She threw 150 pitches.
West (8-3) will host Pendleton County this Thursday, April 4. They will look to avenge a 7-1 loss from last week on the road.
