Lewisburg, WV (WVDN) – Greenbrier County Schools trusts that the media understands that school systems are limited related to information we can release regarding any student matter, disciplinary or otherwise. Federal law, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and state law (State Policy 4350), prevent a school system from sharing specific student information.
With that said, the school system strictly complies with state policy (4373) and the county student code of conduct. Administration assures that the Greenbrier County Board of Education has acted swiftly and appropriately and in compliance with all legal mandates relating to the wrestling incident. The matter is now in the hands of law enforcement with whom we will fully cooperate. The same immediate attention has been given to the racial incident recently referenced in the media. In all instances, it is our priority to provide any needed resources to students impacted.
Superintendent Bryant has announced his planned retirement after 43 years of dedicated service to Greenbrier County Schools. His commitment to education and excellence will have a lasting impact on our school system and those who have had the opportunity to know and work with him. With respect, he asked that the focus for this last quarter of the school year remain on the students, teachers, and staff of Greenbrier County Schools.
Unfortunately, some have drawn the incorrect conclusion that his retirement is related to the recent incidents in the school system. However, that is simply not the case. Addressing these situations was of the highest priority for Mr. Bryant, and it will continue to be a priority moving forward.
